Bellamy deal back track or just smoke and mirrors? Luke James looks at the story behind the headlines

JUST an hour ago a raft of Facebook and Twitter updates heralded the imminent arrival of Wales captain Craig Bellamy at Cardiff City.

Steve Tucker, Western Mail and South Wales Echo reporter, filed a story on WalesOnline which said Bellamy would put pen to paper tomorrow and would then join his new team mates. That was that and Cardiff fans believed they had just made the biggest signing in the clubs history.

Western Mail backtracked

Skip forward half an hour and Steve Tucker’s story has been pulled down from WalesOnline to be replaced by a story titled ‘Bluebirds link to Craig Bellamy intensifies’ which is a far cry from the original headline – Cardiff City to sign Craig Bellamy.

Bellamy ponders a move to his home town club

Over on Twitter Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd certainly hasn’t been told if a deal has been done, his tweet around 7.20 read: “Has he signed??? It would be quality if he does?”

At 8pm BBC Wales reported that a Cardiff spokesman said: “With the number and names of the clubs being mentioned in connection with Craig, it is flattering that we are an option.

“But at this stage, it is pure speculation.”

The real deal

There are a number of possibilities here and Craig Bellamy may well be about to put pen to paper on a deal to bring him to his home town.

As someone who is fairly familiar with the political spin machine this story smacks of it and perhaps something is happening behind the headlines here, but who is briefing who? Did Cardiff City tell Steve Tucker Bellamy had signed to try and send other interested clubs off the scent.

Somehow I don’t think so because Tucker isn’t on good terms with Dave Jones which has resulted in him being banned from the media centre at the club for periods of time and having a poor relationship with the media officers which makes me think perhaps Tucker did have a hotline to somebody close to Bellamy.

Perhaps a source close to Craig has called Steve Tucker and given him information in the hope it makes the deal a more realistic prospect. You get the sense that fans and journalists alike think that if they believe the deal can come off  and say so enough then it might just happen.

Whatever is occurring, it looks like the ‘Craig Bellamy song’ thread on the Cardiff City message board might be a bit premature.
